Sounds like you may have a massive vacuum leak. First check the intake manifold. There is supposed to by a plug on each end that looks like a small freeze plug,. they have been know to fall out. Hard

It is normal for them to need full choke to start even in the (UK at least) summer. They are all different but mine must then be pushed back half-way immediately after starting or it is way too rich.
