Just FYI I finally found the problem relating to the whine coming from the rear of my Midget. It turned out to be a broken oil seal between the dust cover and the pinion front bearing behind the diff

I does indeed sound as if you have a bad bearing in the rear axle. And yes you can change them yourself at home. The Haynes manual I have has a pretty good breakdown on removing the axles, which is
