Here's a newbie question... If MGs are british cars, why are all the nuts bolts etc on these cars standard instead of metric? Were they just being conciderate to us Americans? Wade Shanley wadesh@msn

Wade, MGs and all British cars produced before around 1980? were SAE. England only Metricated recently. Bruce 1974 MGB

Paul, You can use grade 5 fine threaded Bolts/nuts in standard SAE sizes. I get them from my local hardware store. Bruce 74 MGB

In short, yes you can. The vast majority of the nuts and bolts on your car will be the same as SAE fine thread. Threads in aluminum castings and such are often coarse thread, which is the same as our

Just my $0.02 worth: AF is the name for tools that fit UNF bolts and nuts. If you look at the top of the bolt head it will probably be marked UNF.
