It may be that the grease inside the wiper motor and wheel boxes has solidified over the years and is creating too much drag on the moving bits. It isn't terribly difficult to clean them up and renew

You're sure right about RainX. I think it's great stuff; my wife hates it and says it clouds the glass. Bob swear by it, but I hated it and thought it made vision more difficult in some situations.

Stiffness or hardened grease can certainly cause the wipers to run slowly, and even stall. But there is another problem if the worm and gear are jumping out of mesh. PaulH.
