A couple of turns of black electrical tape works wonders for me. I do this on both the shoulder and the 'valley'. I've been using this method for years with no ill effects. I used to use duct tape,

I agree. Duct tape will also work. I have done my W/Ws this away for years. Just don't use any type of wheel cleaner that will dissolve the glue on the tape. Mike R

One guy I know doesn't bother with the rubber bands. He just wraps the wheels with black electrical tape. It works for him.

Use a roll of 10 mil PVC plumber's tape and tape over the spoke nipples. Mine have lasted a very long time. I was advised by our tire shop not to use duct tape. They did a lot of wire wheel work, so
