Does anyone have an idea of how much play, if any, is acceptable between the wheel and spline. My TR3 has fairly new wheels and splines that look good. The triangles look sharp and symetrical but the

Unfortunately (for me, anyway) I inadvertently deleted several e-mail messages including the one asking about wire wheel play. I also deleted some of the replies to my fuel pump question. Sigh. Sorry

Sure, when it rusts. When mounting wheels, put lots of grease or anti-seize compound on the spines to keep them from rusting. Rust can make it impossible to get the wheel off the hub. I had in my pil

The original question was asked by George DeVeau, but I'm not sure if Roland's answer addresses exactly what George was asking. Certainly once the wire wheel has the knowckoff installed, there shoul

Clarification of Wire Wheel Play Thanks for the help on my TR3 wheel play problem. I guess that I was a bit unclear as to where the play was, so here goes.... Without the knockoff, wheel in place, ab

My first thought on this thread was that possibly there was a slight mismatch between axle and hub (e.g. one was a not-quite-perfect replacement part of some sort), but perhaps that's a bit farfetche

George DeVeau writes about Whackin' Wire Wheels; One of the problems that I see with Knockoffs is that, unlike torquing a nut or bolt, there are no guides to quantify a "whack", maybe "Whack-Newtons"

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think the key to George's question is in his description that "the triangles look sharp". These are supposed to be square splines, NOT pointy triangles. Sounds l

George did say that he was SURE they are on the correct sides (i.e. righthand threads on the left side, left-hand threads on the right side), but that was my first thought, too. As the VTR article st

Finding play after hearing a `clonk' sounds to me like the first stage of spline failure. The `clonk' is the sound of the splines skipping a tooth or two, and if the knockoff rotates with the wheel r

I would agree with all of the responces to the wire wheel play. All of the splines I have seen on the LBC's ahve been flat on top unless they were worn beyond use. I had a personal experience that ma
