Update on my locking in first with 67 BJ8. I called Dennis Welch this morning and spoke to someone in their trans department regarding the first gear assembly I bought through Moss from them. He said
"I could see the problem was that the rods were moving too far forward. Putting a pad cut from linoleum into the shifter rod recesses fixed it." ___________________ Steve, Do any parts or service man

The pad is installed in a recess between the adapter bell and the gearbox, so you do need to separate the bell. The recess in the bell is for clearance for the shifter rods. Steve Byers HBJ8L/36666 B
I can't for the life remember if I put that pad in when I assembled my bell housing. I see that it's N/A at Moss. How thick should the pad be? Guess I'll drop the tranny next weekend and take a peek.
Since I didn't have an old pad to look at, I have no idea how thick the original pad was -- or what it was made of. I cut a piece out of scrap linoleum (1/16" - 1/8"?) and shaped it to fit the reces
