The exception to that would be if you're only using Cat 6 as a "future proofing" effort, and are willing to replace (hopefully easily accessible) connectors if you do try to upgrade beyond Gigabit E

Actually, not silly at all. When Cat 5 was new, the connectors were quite pricey, but cat 3 conns were fairly cheap. Same today with cat 5 and 6. You can get cat 5 connectors for under $2. It might

Nope. The Cat6 (and all the others) have specs covering how the cables are to be terminated, and what you terminate them with. It's usually poor workmanship that lead to problems at blocks and jacks.
