Hi all, I need to buy a chainsaw for general use, trees, firewood, etc. I never have owned a chainsaw before and would like some guidance on: - brands to avoid - reliable brands - features to get/avo

Anything cheap. Stihl. You want a saw with an intertial and lever-activated chain brake. Don't get one with a solid unmovable guard in front of the front handle. That gets in the way and doesn't work

Poulan is pretty much the bottom of the barrel for quality. Avoid them and the no-name brands and you can equitably compare the other name brands on features and power. The only name brand I don't ha

As eric said, stihls are good saws. I have had jonsered for years, they are made in the same factory as husquvarna. All three are good saws, and a new saw will have the safety features you want. I se

I'll be different than some of the others... I have a 10 year (or so) old Craftsman chain saw. It works just fine. It doesn't have a lot of fancy features (other than automatic chain oiling), but it

Just curious on the list wisdom of emptying the tank and then running the carb dry before storage. I use to always do this, but last couple of years have gotten lazy, and this past weekend pulled the

That's a really good idea. I do it on my two-stroke trials motorcycles by turning off the fuel petcock and letting the bike run the carb dry. It works pretty well for keeping the carb from gumming up

My other hobby is antique outboards, which are almost universally two stroke. Personally, I have strong opinion, but often brought up in this discussion is that, when you run a two stroke dry on gas,

There's quite a bit of residual oil in the cases. A single cylinder engine will run as long as there's gas in the carb. A trials motorcycle will idle for about two minutes on a bowl full of gas. Of

I like cheap electric chain saws, too. I got mine from Harbor Fright. One came with a pole saw attachment so I can cut limbs that I can't otherwise reach on fire-scorched oak trees. The other one has

That's a good habit. The key for expediency is knowing where, about 1/4 mile before getting home, you need to turn the petcock, so you run out of gas just as your motorcycle pulls into it's parking
