The rear light clusters did not have a ground wire from the factory, they rely on grounding through the physical fixings. In the main fusebox A1 and A2 is the bottom fuse, connecting brown to purple.

Ah, my apologies for the confusion. 'Side lights' to a Brit are those that come on with the first position of the main lighting switch, nothing to do with side marker lights (which the UK never had).
