Another lister (Trevor Boicey, I think) once suggested buying a cheap 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor or extension and grinding it carefully so that it just fits in the recess. The reason you are having trouble

Find a bolt the diameter of which is at last the length of one side of the square recess in the plug. Cut the bolt thread off, leaving about 3/4" of the shank. File the shank till you have four flat

Oh I went through this same thing!!! Get a big fat bolt and grind that sucker square or sort of square. and keep it in a safe place for the next time.

Actually, even though the hole is bigger than a 3/8 ratchet, it works just fine. I have a "proper" tool, but have happily and successfully use the 3/8 drive 40 or 50 times (yes I change diffs a *lot*

It doesn't work on my Midget 1500. I remember trying it. It wouldn't work on the fill plug. It looked like it MIGHT have worked on the drain plug, but getting the drain plug out and not the fill plug
