Shouldn't be a problem to by pass it but better to fix it. It's just a rheostat - they don't break very often. Usually they just get dirty and corroded. Spray some electrical cleaner like Cremalin or

I suppose in humid areas, the propellant might condense some of the water in the air and carry it to the surface, but I don't imagine that would be enough to be any worry. It sure is a dust collector
