OK listers, I need some advice. I've been experiencing a random backfiring problem upon acceleration and I thought it would be a good idea to remove the distributor and lubricate the camshaft and cen

Hint for future situations -- before removing distributor, scribe matching lines on the distributor base and the clamp or block (actually both are necessary on the B). At least you will be able to pi

Fit points and a condenser. Seriously, substitution is about the only way electronic ignition systems can be faulted, and points and condenser are cheaper than a new ignition system. What complicates

Yes, i did make a mark on the distributor and the clamp, but not on the clamp and the block. I removed the clamp to clean the dirt and rust off without realizing the mounting holes were elongated, so

I thought of fitting conventional points in there, but the 45DE doesn't have a distributor cam to open the points. Since this was originally a Lucas electronic ignition, there is simply a round shaf

Actually, I don't think the adjustment range on those slotted holes is very much, probably less than the vernier adjustment on the early distributor. Put it smack in the middle and you can't be too f

I find those slots very useful for timing alteration, you know it is going to be fairly near when you put the distributor back in, probably enough to start and do a strobe check, and on the 45D at le

Ah yes, I should have said to replace the top half of the distributor shaft as Paul, I thought of fitting conventional points in there, but the 45DE doesn't have a distributor cam to open the points.

Oh, I didn't realize just the top half could be replaced. How do you separate the two shafts? I think points would be a good troubleshooting option. Thanks, donny v 1978 MGB Paul, I thought of fittin

Should be a screw or clip under the rotor. Removing the trigger plate will reveal the springs and weights, unhook the springs (can be fiddly, watch they don't fly away or get stretched) after removin
