That number, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in the US, faces to be read from outside of the car, looking toward the rear end. This number MUST match the registration, or your claim of owners

You are lucky you weren't arrested - it's a federal offense to remove the vin number from a car - although it's done all the time :) I had a similar experience my title showed the slant (/) as a 1 -

Too true! Fortunately, I convinced the officer that I had bought the car as a restoration project and that the VIN plate was in a box when I got the car. I then showed him the matching stamped number
