I filed a flat on each rivet head, then cut a slot into each. With an impact screwdriver set on reverse, mine came right out. The rivets are threaded, but the thread is a very lazy one -- kinda like

On mine the plate was missing, but the rivets were there..... I was able to grip the rivets with a small vise-grip and pull and twist them out. Drilling on the block makes me nervous. David W. Jones

I tried to remove my plate by using a small vise-grip. It twisted the head of one of the rivets. I ended up having to drill out the remaining portion of the rivet. Very scary. The shaft of the rivet

Put some of the penetrant oil on them and let sit for a while--then pry and gently twist them out. I wouldn't drill them.
