Hi Jim: Yah. My understanding (usually suspect :-) ) is that on the early upper arms the ball joint sort of sticks out (less arm around it), which lets you run wider rims--or maybe it's larger rims--

I have just completed the rebuild of my crossmember using advice from Doug, the Logan design for the fulcrum pins, the Crawley engineering for the stiffer yoke area and Dales' Ackerman modification.
