Kevin There is only one wire. By connecting to the other post and the fuel guage reads full means that the sending unit itself is bad and not your gauge. Simple fix. Rick \\

There should be a ground wire, it usually goes back to the trunk bolt where all the rear lights are grounded. The sender, like the fuel pump, will generally ground through their physical connections

Although the sending unit should be grounded by the mounting, When I got my B the fuel guage didn't work. I checked all the wires, they were good, I attached a ground wire to the sender ground stud
