I have had cars with both, the voltmeter never seemed to do anything, the ammeter told me if the battery was charging or discharging, I found this useful and it pointed out problems quickly. Greg Lem

If you have a voltmeter you can tell the state of the battery and if the generator is charging. Granted you won't be able to tell how much charge but if the voltage rises it is charging. The install

Install an amp gauge it will tell you instantly if there is a problem. The volt gauge is like a fuel gauge it tells you how much is in the battery and when it is empty its to late. -- -- David Nock N

I have a very unique gauge and I have only seen one other like it. It is a Smiths combination oil pressure/oil temperature. It has the 100 style bezel and the mounting bracket with lighting holder. E
