I know what you mean, but won't the chrome ring clamp both in place even though they aren't stapled together? But if you still have the old unit I'd try removing and reusing the old staples using not

Punch 4 holes in the leather to match the trim ring. Use the 4 screws to hold the chrome ring, the rubber, and the leather together while you insert the screws and tighten everything down. Cheers, Le

That *is* tight. It surprises me, as I would have expected the rubber gaiter to have concertina'd and it and the leather gaiter to have slid down the lever. Can you push them down by hand or are they

I think on both my cars one of the screws is longer than the other, maybe that should be in the front. But with the leather gaiter screwed down I don't think the rubber gaiter is going anywhere, so I
