On the advice of a friend I am looking for some additional (collective) net wisdom. I have a '57 1500 MGA whose gearbox needs to be reconditioned, I am thinking about replacing the gearbox with a mod

That is a little harsh. These could be very nice guys and that was their only way of getting their MGA's on the road.
