I've not found it made any difference unless the rheostat was faulty, but on the ones I have seen each connection has two tags so it is a simple matter to pull one wire off one connection and put it

They are all dim. Some recommend painting the insides of the cans white. Some have tried Radio Shack 7.5v bulbs - bright, but they burn out since they are running at 14v. PaulH
