If it is anything like the Triamph 2500 TC gearbox on my mate's car, then it is a tapered thread. It seals because the plug tapers and jams in the hole. It looks like 1/4 BSP to my untrained eye. --

My Spitfire's transmission drain plug doesn't quite go all the way in, either. Same with the engine sump drain plug. A couple of threads still show, but it's as leakproof as it's going to get. Dan *

Actually, I've had the same problem with the diff on my TR4A ... originally it was almost flush, but after draining 30-something gear lube I can't get it closer that about 3-4 threads short of flush.
