- Recently I backed the 76 spit up a hill and parked it there while trying to rearrange the other lbcs to make room to work on it. It sat there for a week and I started it up and pulled it down the hil

- Hi Bill, There is only a scroll seal on the gearbox input shaft, so it is perfectly possible that gear oil has leaked into the bellhousing after parking on a steep incline, Cheers, Bill. -- Rarebits4

- Does this Spitfire have an O.D. trans? The O.D. trans on a spitfire does not have a seal per say on the input shaft of the trans. It does have a "scroll seal" which is like a reverse thread around t

- Your analysis is correct. (But the carb leak is a red herring). The older 3-rail transmissions definitely did not have a real seal. I'm not sure when they finally added the seal. I have managed to ma

- I doubt that the presence or lack of OD has anything to do with it. I think all the transmissions older than a certain date had the scroll. Actually, the seal is really part of the bellhousing, not t

- Actually,I believe after real seals were added to the trans,O.D. trans still used the scroll. The bellhousing is different, and the input shaft is different. I found this out when I had to replace th

- This must be a 1500 or single rail thing. For the MK IV, the same bellhousing and seal was definitely used for both OD and non-OD transmissions. Doug /// spitfires@autox.team.net mailing list /// or

- This seems to be the case at least through 77. When I had my clutch replaced a few years ago, my mechanic retrofitted a seal. Unfortunately I have no idea how or what parts he used. '77 O/D gearbox.

- I would love to retrofit a seal, but I have never heard of anyone doing it or selling the correct parts. Also, I am not sure if the 3-rail input shaft was designed to take a rubber seal. If I ever go
