Thanks everyone for your help. I made sure that the oil pump shaft was engaged into the distributor drive gear shaft and then I dowsed the whole area in 30wt Kendall oil and on the 5th crank or so, t

You will probably have to prime the oil pump and the filter, what you are describing sounds like the oil pump lost prime.
