Tell me if this is Ok please? Took the bottom off 77 MGB engine. There is a little bit of lateral movement where the connecting rod attaches to the crank shaft. Should there be any movement and if so

There has to be a bit of side clearance between the rod big ends and the journal flanges, so a trace of movement would be expected. (The rod is allowed to move because the wrist pin moves sideways a

That's OK Simon. It's called side play or end play (end float in the king's english). It's measured with a feeler guage - .008" to .012" - after you renew the bearings, etc. Lot's of folks don't both
