You can swap the entire third member from one axle housing to the other. That's easier than swapping the ring and pinions which you can do also but, that requires re-setting the pinion depth and carr

Keep the 3.89 gears from the 1600 vs. the 3.70 gears from the 2000. You'll get a bit more acceleration out of it and will hardly notice the RPMs difference or fuel economy with the 5th gear overdriv

I agree completely with Loren... use the 3.89. You can also get a speedo gear for the trans that will make it read correctly with the 3.89. Greg Burrows 67 2000 #588 (with 3.89)

You can do it either way. Its a pain in the rear(ha ha, get it) to take the rear end and swap gear sets, so I would swap the whole axle. The 2000 axle will have the track bar on the passanger side, s
