- The caustic solution is plain old lye soap. I have a hot caustic tank for cleaning engine blocks and the like. Commonly called a 'jet cleaner'. They work quite well and are less messy than the caust

- I'd second the hot tank suggestion. cart the block down to the local machine shop, hand it over, pick it up the next day, pay the nice man $15 or so, and go home. Low effort, low cost, low household

- Add to the $15 dollars about $170 to align bore new cam bearings! There is an alternative if the machine shop can install precision bearings then align boring is not necessary. ...Art
