Unfortunately, what you describe is typical of most mechanical tachs and speedo's. If the shudder is excessive, lubricating the cables with a graphite lubricant (intended for speedometer cables) may

I'd be willing to bet that you need to lubricate both of your cables. I would recommend that you use something like powdered graphite. Hope this helps you out. Michael '71 TR6 (in pieces)
