It sounds like it's meant to slide on the felt. Maybe the felt needs replacing. Is there possibly a place for a nylon block to be inserted? Maybe the door is supposed to slide on a nylon block with a

there's no nylon block, and I didn't find the remains of one, but when I googled it, I saw a kit to add a nylon rider to a door, but it said that was for use when you couldn't get replacement rollers

nothing on the top of the door and nothing in the door frame in which a roller would ride. the answer seems to be to break out the tig and weld the door shut.

door is about ten years old (house was built in mid-nineties). it's aluminum-framed, double paned glass. I'd take pics (and can), but it looks like every other sliding door when I googled for help. c

A possible clue to look for: Are there any countersunk screw heads on the front or back of the door, low down by the track (or up at the top of the door for that matter)? Sometimes rollers will have
