Your vacume retard unit is broken. It should give loads of retard when your idleing, and then cut out when ever you need power. So at idle it's 2deg ATDC, as soon as you start to use power it cuts ou

A good question is, is your engine original or has it been replaced. Also is it California or Federal. Their are several different places to set your timing depending on the year and engine (I think

Sounds to me as if the PO did more than remove the electrinc ignition, he installed a different distributor with a vacumm ADVANCE rather than RETARD. "NOT THAT THERE"S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!" - S
