Peter, If you didn't take the starter apart, you likely didn't even see the commutator, That is the copper segmented part at the end of the shaft that turns inside the starter. It's the part that the

The commutator is the set of copper bars inside the starter that rub against the starter brushes. If you didn't do anything to the inside of the starter you haven't bothered anything. George Richards
