Hello all,--I recently looked at a friends 67 Sprite and was alarmed to see how much fore and aft play there was in the steering shaft. Pulling on the steering wheel got about 1/4 or more in and out

Any thoughts? Yep.... normally this is the symptom of a worn steering shaft pinch bolt. If the bolt's shaft breaks, you lose your steering. Bolt is located in steering shaft just up from the rack wit

Check and tighten the column/rack bolt NOW! Use locktite, do not drive it until you fix it. If it's not the bolt, which can fall down, hit the frame and lock up the steering,. It may also need a shim

I pulled the pinch bolt out. It looks OK except possibly a little bent. PO had a nyloc nut on it with flat washers. The machined area around the splines is a little worn. I can detect no play in the

Hmmm. Phil's situation made me go look at mine. I can't get any work done today on the Midget because we are having 50 mph winds - tons of airborn dust - and the garage door would be a sail. Anyway,

Phil, You said earlier that you had washers there. I would think the PO was trying to tighten the tubular part onto the splined shaft. Hence my advise to pin the column to the shaft.I had one pull ou
