I've been trying for a long time, unsuccessfully, to stop the oil seal on the axle from leaking on my MK II sprite. I now have no leaks where the paper gasket and rubber ring goes (due to silicone),

Doesn't the hub assembly come off the axel.I think there is a seal there also. Its a regular inner wheel seal, then the rubber o-ring then the paper flange seal. I had to do all three to stop a leak,

I would take a really good look at the seal surface on the axle. Measure it to see if it is the right diameter. If you really think it is the scratches, I would try the JB Weld. Option 7. would be to

Ric & all, Let me tell you the story of the "Secret Schmoo"... This is the Team Thicko method for sealing axle leaks. Get a Speedi Sleeve. Make sure your bearings are good. Don't use the paper gasket

A Speedy sleeve fits over the machined end of the axle, and restores the surface so that the seal can seal. They're made by Chicago Rawhide, (it's metal, despite their name) and available from Winner

1/ a Speedi sleeve will cure the axle ends, ask your bearing specialist 2/ make sure the bearing isn't spinning in the hub, oil gets driven through here by the bearing rotation 3/ make sure the drain

I'll just add that Loctite makes a "Retaining Compound" that will stop the bearing spinning in slightly worn hubs. It cured the oil leak (seep) I was seeing via this path. Mike
