the most common reason a spridget gear box locks up in first gear is the detent balls for the synchroniser have come out of their recessed holes just far enough to neither go back in or come complet

Sounds doable. Since the next logical step is to pull the engine and trans, no matter what route I go, looks like I will start there. Always wanted to see what the insides really looked like anyway.

That's true, the washer will do a temporary fix on this problem, but with worn shifter forks it not really reliable. BTW, I have these washers made for me by my machinest for the one two punch I use
