I generally remove the soft top altogether in the summer for the extra storage space behind the seats, above the battery area. I find that in a light rain, the tonneau keeps the passenger compartment

I took off the top frame that came with my early 1974 MGB and bought a used frame and a new stow-away top. I decided to put in a roll bar that would only fit with the fold-up top frame removed. The
