Hi list, My tach (SMITHS electric) keeps dropping out of service. It comes on again when I tap it firmly. It's a bit annoying. Any ideas on a fix? Andy

Hey Andy! I have the same scenario with the tach in my '77 Midget. Also had the same thing in a '77 MGB...start car, no tach reading, a little tap on the glass and zippo - instant tach. Anyone else?

I had this problem on my trip to Wisconsin. Ask Ron, it drove me nuts all the way out there. I installed a new ground wire to the tach mechanism fixing screw (not the housing) and it fixed it. -- Fra

The first thing I would check is the attachment of the wires on the back. Make sure they are connected securely. If they are, then there could be a loose or cracked connection inside the tach. Steve

I agree, but this begs the question: How do you, or can you, directly connect the tachometer to the coil or whatever to test whether there is a fault in the wiring harness vs in in the tach itself? J

It is possible to remove a tach from the dashboard and connect it to the proper places with jumper wires to check whether a fault might be in the wiring harness. You would have to determine the "prop
