I am considering the purchase of a Spitfire racer and will need a trailer & tow vehicle. Advice received so far has been that a dual axel trailer towed by a full size pick-up would be the safe way to

Gary, it depends somewhat on the weight of the trailer and the load rating of the tow vehicle. I special-ordered my '91 Ford Explorer with full trailer towing package. It's rated at around 2900 lbs.

I'm pulling a dual axle trailer and wish I wasn't. If I had my druthers I'd get a lightweight aluminum trailer to fit my TR3. I think my trailer weighs more than my car. You can easily overkill on tr

On Thu, 13 Aug 1998, Bill Babcock raised some interesting points: My prime thought in expressing my own desire for a dual-axle trailer is just the added security of the two extra wheels and tires. It

You might be better off with axle skids than dual wheels if you're worried about a blowout. If you look at the way most dual axle linkages work (at least mine) they're not all that helpful in a blowo

I've towed a Spitfire on a single axle trailer, that was custom built for the car. Lightweight, easy to move by hand when unloaded. I've done most of the towing with a Jeep Cherokee, 4 liter six and

Hi Gary, I used to pull my Spitfire with a Ranger 6 cyl. It was OK but very difficult on any sort of hill. I use a medium weight single axle trailer. I had a trailer tire blow out with this set up on

Smaller tow vehicles will work fine if they have a good HP to weight ratio. Ford Rangers, Chevy s-10's etc., etc., with a v-6 will do the job. BUT they are not as stable of a platform like a larger

Gary Warning...anecdotal recital to follow... I used to pull a single axle traler with a Ford Econoline 240 six cylinder three speed. The trailer weighed 980 pounds (at 1000 pounds you needed brakes)

Gary...several of the guys we race with have single axle trailers with Rangers...and do just fine...but strongly urge electric brakes on the trailer tho. P.S. I know where there is a Mk III Spitfire

Yeah, but there is something (much, actually) to be said for those such as you who hang onto the nearly lost tradition of driving to the track, racing that same vehicle, then driving home. Even a lot

FWIW, I had a tire blow out on my dual axle trailer - it was my own fault, pretty much. I had lousy Uniroyal tires on it, and had gotten them rather warm driving a bit faster than I should have comin

Realize that when towing with a single axle trailer you may be exceeding the weight rating of the tires. Determine the total weight of the vehicle on the trailer and the weight of the trailer itself.
