I don't think he'll even attempt to rebuild the old box. I've used this guy for a lot of other major mechanicals on my car and he's fast, honest, reasonably priced and knows what he's talking about.

There is nothing wrong with the 4-synchro transmission (as you noticed), but I don't understand why your mechanic is so sure that a used 4-synchro unit will be so much more reliable than a used 3-syn
