Replaced the points, (gapped @ .015), condensor, cap, rotor, etc. upon trying to crank, all i got was a hellacious backfire. set the front piston to TDC with the crank pulley, pulled the distributor

If it's like most LUCAS dizzies, it should only go one way. If you look at it from the end, the drive part of it is slightly off center. Like cutting a pie in half and making one side a little bigger

Robert when the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke the rotor should point to the #1 cylinder. The dizzy drive tang is slightly off center and cannot be installed 180' off. Cheers, Larry

Mr. Williford never stated if he yanked the distributor. I would think yanking the dizzy in a tune-up borders on 'cruel & unusal punishemnt.' If he didn't and if the firing order is off by that much,
