I find the smaller sizes handy to use taps when cleaning out threaded holes. And then you can use socket extensions for the hard to get/reach places like a tap extension or pulley tap. Joe Szwed

You are better off with an inexpensive set of 3/8 sockets designed to be used for taps. They have rubber covers that hold the tap to the socket. I bought mine from HF and have found them to be excell

My Triumphs have multiple square headed pipe plugs, for gearbox drain & fill, engine oil drain and differential drain & fill. As someone already said, you want something that will grip all 4 corners
