Vance touched on something that I have been wondering about. I have been having problems with my newly rebuilt engine running roughly. I finally got the timing straightened out but it runs like it ha

My rough running was due to misadjusted bypass valves. These should be closed at idle, but mine were open. 1-1/2 turns CCW on each and life was MUCH better. These are vacuum "leaks", but I could not

Mike C.--I can't tell you if or where you might have the vacuum leak that you suspect. There are a couple of points that have been offered to you that is open for debate. Meanwhile, you should have v

I hope this time I can finish the thought before I hit the combination of wrong keys that sends the message again... The purpose of the thermo switch was to block the vacuum retard if the engine over

I don't have a TR6 vacuum map in front of me and don't have an EGR on my car but I believe on most cars, the thermal switch is used to delay EGR and/or spark advance until the engine has warmed. My u

My '71 doesn't have a thermo switch. I have strong vacuum at the diaphragm at idle. I was concerned that a leak in the retard unit might be the source of a lean condition. My next step will to be to

The thermal vacuum switch does not influence the function of the EGR on the TR6. The EGR valve is closed at idle, and closed at wide open throttle (WOT) but is open at cruise. It dilutes the amount

I'm trying to tell whether the vacuum retard unit on my 1973 TR6 distributor is working properly. When I apply a vacuum to it, it moves but does not hold the vacuum, so returns to its resting positio

As far as I know the vacuum retard was introduced to reduce the emissions at idle. It can be removed and the idle adjusted to compensate. There are some that say it does no harm since it plays no rol

James-- If your vacuum supply is constant and the timing won't stay retarded, (14 deg. would be about right) then the retard capsule may be leaking. Tee in a vacuum gauge to the test line to see if y
