.025 cold too wide? I should think so... The only setting I remember on both my Spridgets and my brother's Mini was .012 cold... and my racing Bugeye also requires .012 (setting recommended by Schnei

Time to put the head on tomorrow. Before removal, I checked the valves and they were at .025 cold. Might be a little wide. I was going to start at .019 or less until it warms up, then reset. What's t

Normal is 0.012, cold with standard cam If it is a "hot" cam then 0.016 If you want to be cautious, do them at 0.016 and then when things have settled down re-torque the head and re-set to factory sp

That, of course, assumes the standard 1.3:1 rocker arms. Since what you are really trying to adjust is the vertical free motion on the pushrod side (rather hard to measure), the clearance on the val

I am not sure I understand. If one measures clearance between the valve stem and the rocker pad then why should this clearance measurement be different for a 1.5:1 rocker. It does vary with differen

Guy, Is there such a thing as "normal" any more? Sometimes I wonder. The point is that you ARE measuring clearance between the valve stem and the rocker pad because that is the only point where you

No, it isn't measuring the actual cam clearance. It is, however, a convenient place to measure. Therefore, the numbers that are published for this set the correct clearance for the cam, ASSUMING that

Well that makes sense. Just as the lift of the valve is altered by the different rocker ratio, then so will be the "lost movement" in the clearance. Interesting discussion! Guy -- Original Message --

That old Chevy probably had hydraulic lifters. Tighten 3/4 turn or so after the clacking stops. I think you need the feeler to get solid lifter clearances right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Che

I well remember setting valves on cars with the motor warmed up and idling. I do it cold these days as recommended, but had no real trouble setting them warm and running. As I recall, the problem was

The reason that the valves still sound noisy after a proper adjustment is that the rocker arm end that touches on the valve stem has had a small recess pounded into it after many years of use. I've s

Derf is correct. My first setting of hydraulic lifters was an expensive learning session. Some one said tighten them down till they stop clacking, I did, then I gave them a few more turns just to be

Try Gunson's Click Adjust tool. No need for a feeler gauge and it takes the recess in the rocker face into account and makes the correct valve adjustment. No need to replace the rockers or have them
