I now have my spark back-- problem was: a) damaged wire short circuit and b) broken white wire in harness, and c) ignition switch fault. As two of these three were intermittent, I was quite frustrat

More or less. There is a bit of crossover through the balance pipe but you are correct in assigning the blame to that carb if those two plugs are identically bad. Stuck choke, ovalled jet, malfunctio

Yes, It sounds like the front carb is set too rich. First check the front carb for: a stuck choke sticking float needle perforated or leaking float Good luck Rick Morrison 72 MGBGT 74 Midget
