To check the water pump bearing for close-ity (SIC!) to failure, grab the fan and wiggle it side to side (with the engine off, of course). If the shaft moves appreciably, the water pump is on its way

The easiest way to check that I know is to slacken the Vee belt and feel for slop or play in either the water pump or the dynamo. Of course, it's cheaper to replace the water pump, but easier to repl

Check the fan on the generator, when loose this makes the noise you hear. (Of course I didn't hear it) 80% of the time it is the generator either loose fan or bad bearing. Good luck Frank
