I've just reconditioned my wire wheels (knockoffs, 4.5x14, newly painted silver) and am about to have new tires put on. A couple of questions that I think have been mentioned on the list before, but

I believe this is common. Just to cover the spoke heads. I would worry about duct tape longevity. Used on exterior applications it delaminates and makes a peeling, sticky mess. Could make replacing t

I have wondered about this for some time. Since the splines eventually wear out, one can assume that there is some movement between wheel and hub. Thus, some kind of grease that minimises the wear ef

I used 2" wide duct tape when I replaced one of my wire wheels 4 years ago with no problems so far. I wrapped it so as to cover the spoke nipples with two layers of tape. I also use silver antiseize

There has to be clearance between the splines of the wheel and hub or you would have to press the wheels on and off. Grease certainly helps cushion the impact that occurs between the faces of the spl

I used a caulking tube of black quick cure (polyurethane?) which is used by pros on windshield sealing. I was told that this was the same stuff you see on the inside new Daytona wire wheels. Cleaned

With brand new hubs and wheels there is almost no rotational play in the wheel. If you clean the inside of the wheel where the spoke heads are and coat them with a good sealer the spokes will not lea

Wheels and hubs wear because that's the nature of mechanical parts. Wear is accelerated by the faults described. It should be pointed out that sealing the spokes from within the hubs is not a one-tim

I have a related question- how tight do you tighten the center cap? The center of my wheel is tapered and the nut has a tapered hole, so the nut doesn't tighten down suddenly but tightens gradually.

Because the nuts/spinners are handed they *won't* go back on the wrong side of the car - unless you really really try. I'm assuming you didn't get the hubs off, this *would* allow the nuts to go back

I keep hitting it with a leather-faced hammer until it stops moving. Rarely while driving I'll hear a "swishing" sound, and sure enough, that knockoff will take a few more degrees of rotation. David
