This is not a racing question. I'm sure the ignition retard is often disabled on 6 cylinder Triumphs. Does anyone know why it was used in the first place? I have always thought it was strictly for em

I read somewhere that it was to pass emissions at idle speed. Bob Kramer Sent from my iPhone disabled on 6 cylinder Triumphs. Does anyone know why it was used in the first place? I have always though

Supposedly it raises cylinder pressure at idle (by allowing the throttle to be open farther at idle), and hence promotes more complete combustion, reducing HC emissions. That would be the throttle b

Wonderful retard! This was an emission "feature" that would retard the timing only at idle with the throttle plates closed in order to meet the US emissions. Unless you need to meet any state emissio

If they only wanted it retarded at idle, there would be simpler ways to do it. My TR250 had a little valve which activated the vacuum retard with the throttle linkage. Why make it vacuum dependent? A

It wasn't really vacuum dependent on the TR6, any more than on your TR250. They just eliminated the (complicated and troublesome) valve by using a special port in the carb, placed such that it only

It is a lot easier looking at the emission problem from 45 years away. At the time is was a disaster for everyone. *Never be beaten by equipment.* _______________________________________________ fot@
