I have replaced the clear bulbs in my "flame throwers" with yellow fog lights and I would like to dim them some. I think a rheostat would do it but I am concerned with the heat generated in the rheos

Well, you cannot use a normal SMITHS rheostat, it just has not got the wattage and will burn out instantly, causing a fire hazard. Anyway you cannot dim halogen bulbs very well as they will wear out
