If it has been idle for a long time, your battery might be low. I would charge the battery and clean the terminals before blaming the starter. Also take the cap off the end of the starter and rotate

If you really do end up needing a starter, buy a gear reduction startercheaper and much better than the originals - seems to spin twice as fast. IMHO a gear reduction starter and a Pertronix ignition

I have reduction-type starters on two Healeys and one MG engine with standard ring gears. All engage without problem though I did have use shims on one of the Healeys to get the pinion clear of the

Jon: I have the gear reduction starter on my BJ8. It works fine with the original ring gear. The only problem I had installing it was interference by the hydraulic line to the clutch slave cylinder.

The part number on my BJ8 starter is 25578B. There is another number M418G which can also be found on other part number Lucas starters, but I don't know what the number signifies. An internet search

The TR4 and TR4A, and probably the later Triumph TR3s used a starter identical to the BJ8 except for the pinion and sleeve and the part no. on the case. Must be tons of Triumph starters out there. A
