Hi Patrick, What you propose will work but DO NOT do it... Can be a real hazard!! If on the GPS if there is any metal part exposed that part is now the negative lead as most all devices that are for

We have a Garmin C330 in our BJ8 and a Garmin Nuvi265 in the BT7. Both cars are positive earth and both GPS units are plugged into isolated cigarette lighted sockets with red wire to earth the way Go
