One cable from the battery should go to the solenoid, the other should be bolted to the chassis. Find the one bolted to the chassis and follow it to the battery. Whichever terminal on the battery is

Coil will operate with points no matter which way it is hooked up, this is a bad way to check. Just check which terminal from the battery is connected to ground, it's the only test that's 100% accur

You could always use the generator as an indicator--hook the car up whichever way you choose and then see if the generator is putting out current. If not you guessed wrong. __________________________
